Artists on a visual design team are encouraged to draw as many different designs as possible and creative directors slowly fine tune the product based on gameplay feasibility, general art style, and other characters.

Someone didn’t draw one sketch of Mercy and get yelled at by mean old papa blizzard to MYEH MAKE HER A WHITE LADY. There were walls and walls of Mercy concepts and designs and through the design process she became what she is today.

Like I get it, y’all wanted the original, but this isn’t some sort of blizzard tyranny shit.

More than anything you see how the various designs end up distilled or transferred to other characters. You weren’t denied a cute black guy support because they made Mercy a white chick, they pushed those aspects to Lucio. Just like we weren’t denied a thick short-haired D-Va, since those design elements were pushed over to Zarya.
