Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of those “America is officially a Nazi state” and “America is doomed” posts. If you call yourself a progressive and you’ve made, reblogged, or liked a single one of those posts, listen up.

It isn’t over.

The American midterm elections are coming up — all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and about 1/3rd of the seats in the Senate are up for grabs in November 2018. These are the people who are responsible for passing laws, regulating the power of the Executive and Judicial branches, and handling the impeachment process (you know, not that we’d need that soon or anything).

There is no electoral college in the way of midterm elections, and historically midterms have lower turnout than presidential elections.

YOUR VOTE IN THE MIDTERMS WILL MAKE AN IMPACT.

If you will be 18 by November 6, 2018, YOU CAN REGISTER TO VOTE, even if you’re 17 now. Registering to vote is so easy. Last week I rode my bike down to my county’s administration building, walked in without an appointment, asked where I could register, and walked out five minutes later as a legal voter. It took me longer to get to the building than it took to register.

Qualifications vary by state, so you might have to do some digging on the information you’ll need, but if I can figure out how to register on my own, you can do it as well.

“I’m disabled/too busy working/attending school outside of my state/cannot vote for some reason.” ABSENTEE BALLOTS. THEY EXIST. USE THEM.

“I don’t have the legal rights to vote.” You probably have friends who do, but aren’t likely to vote in the midterms. Give them a friendly reminder of how much power the House and the Senate have.

“The President will just ignore the House and the Senate, like he has been doing the last two years. The system’s rigged. It’s hopeless.” The House and the Senate are both currently Republican majorities. You haven’t seen the House and the Senate push back yet because they don’t have Democratic majorities. If you are qualified to vote, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHANGING THE AMOUNT OF POWER THAT THE HOUSE AND SENATE HAVE.

If you call yourself an activist and want to brag about how much you care about immigrants on Tumblr, you WILL be in the polling booth this November. If you still don’t care about voting, I don’t know why you’re posting about politics at all.

Learn your system, understand your power, and vote in the damn midterms.

to add to this, young voter turnout is generally abysmal but thanks to organizing and canvasing we’re seeing a rise in young voter turnout. Additionally, younger people tend to vote progressive! so don’t just go vote yourself, CONVINCE YOUR FRIENDS TO VOTE. The biggest goal for the democratic party is to get MORE voter turnout, not just trying to get fence sitters to pick them.

GET YOUR FRIENDS TO VOTE.

Make sure you yell at the winning candidate after voting like you wanna talk to their manager, too.
They represent you, and the political world is flooded with wealthy bribery. They must be meant to feel that they’ll be voted out if they betray their home district.

It wasn’t voting alone that pushed Traditional Democrats further left on healthcare issues, it was groups like ADAPT being arrested directly out of wheelchairs for protesting just outside Congress’ vote on repealing healthcare without a fix in place.
Prior to that, Dems refused to answer any question concerning it.

Voting is vital and important to slowing damage, but improving life comes with the entertainment of yelling at candidates, too.
